Property Data Availability

Although MatWeb makes every effort to find all available material property data, some material properties are not available for every entry in the database.  The table below will give you some guidance to help you make the best possible use of our Property Search Page.

If you are searching for materials that meet your property specification(s), and a material in MatWeb does not have that data point available, then that material is not returned from the search.  Do not let this discourage you from using our powerful Property Search for these reasons:

  • MatWeb is much more likely to have complete data on common alloys, plastics, and ceramics than uncommon ones.  For example, the entry for annealed titanium Ti-6Al-4V, the most common titanium alloy, has 24 searchable properties while the entry for the experimental titanium alloy Corona 5 has just ten searchable property values.

  • Properties that are relevant to a material's intended use are much more likely to be included than property data that is not relevant.  For example, while the oxygen transmission rate is available for only 2% of the polymers in MatWeb, this value is available for all of MatWeb's ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) entries.  EVOH is used as a barrier layer in coating and packaging where oxygen transmission is a vital property.  Typical applications of most polymers do not involve barrier properties; manufacturers do not spend the money required to test them; therefore we don't report these values.  To make this Web site as useful as possible, MatWeb has enabled you to search on less common properties, but please understand our limitations.

  • As you set up your search parameters, be aware that the same fundamental property can be measured and subsequently reported in one of several fields.  Prime examples are hardness and impact strength.  The best approach to finding high impact plastics is to search on both Charpy AND Izod impact strengths, either in the same search submission using the "Match at Least One" button or in subsequent searches.
